DO WE NEED THIS PARK AND WHY?

Goshen, Kentucky July 28, 2009 — The North Oldham Lions Club is holding a community meeting Tuesday night, July 28 at 7:00 PM at the Belknap Park Lions Club. We are looking for community participation and volunteers to support the benefit for the Belknap Community Park Festival and Chili Cook Off in October. Come help us create an event that will generate funds to maintain the Belknap Community Park. If you use or enjoy this park you need to be here.

According to Carol Hublar, our project chairperson of the North Oldham Lions Club, “Money raised on October 11 will allow Lions to meet pressing needs in our community of maintaining the Park. Lions members thank everyone who has contributed in the past to this important work. You are truly helping Lions make a difference in our community.”

Guacamole

Hi! My name is Guacamole and now a 12 week old male neutered kitten. I was found as a tiny baby, not even weaned yet, in a sealed box with 15 other small kittens. Some were my brothers and sisters, some were from other families. It was cold and we were all hungry. Thankfully we were found and fed and taken in out of the cold. I was the smallest of the crew. My foster mom was afraid I might not even make it once when I stopped eating but I recovered quickly! Now we are all healthy and strong and have grown incredibly affectionate! We all love cuddling and giving kisses but know how to entertain ourselves when necessary too. As with all rescue kitties, it’s is now time for us to strike out and find our new forever homes. I’ll keep you smiling with my silly antics, and love on you when playtime is over. I know you won’t be sorry you chose me – I’ll be your best friend forever if you give me a chance. Fall is rapidly approaching with the first day of Autumn arriving on September 22nd. With a bit of planning and work now, you will be enjoying a beautiful spring. Now is the time to sow seed or fertilize your lawn or even plant some Daffodils or Tulips. If you’ve been thinking about installing leaf guards for you gutters, you’d better get moving. The leaves will be changing to various shades of red, yellow and burnt orange quicker than you might anticipate. That is if we get some rain soon, and they don’t fall off from dehydration first. Oh, and if you plan on pulling weeds, wear gloves. I wasn’t so lucky to have someone remind me. With a little bit of luck, my blisters will be healed about the same time the flowers bloom.

Trust me, when your lawn sprouts up a full beautiful shade of green, and the flowers begin to bloom … you’ll thank me in the Spring.

Oldham County Aquatic Center

Last week our whole family visted the Aquatic Center here in Oldham County. There is a large water slide at the park. Being the adventurous mom that I am, I convinced my oldest daughter, Emie to go down, too. After one trip up the stairs, one trip back down, then one more trip back up, she finally went down the slide with a look of sheer terror on her face. I watched as she dropped into the water, came up gasping for air and then slowly a smile spread across her face. For the rest of the day there was no stopping her! Up the stairs, down the slide, over and over again! On the trip home I bragged to my husband about my wisdom in “pushing” Emie down the slide. I knew it was something she could do and I knew she’d have a blast doing it!

Yesterday Emie and I returned to the Aquatic Center for one last hurrah before she starts 1st grade. This time I convinced her to try jumping off the diving board into the deep end. “Mommy, it’s way too deep!” she said with a trembling voice. “It doesn’t matter how deep it is, Emie. It just matters how far it is to swim to the edge.” So, she climbed up the stairs, walked to the end of the diving boad, stood at the edge for what seemed like an hour, and then turned around to walk back to the stairs. Suddenly she slipped on some water and fell right off the board onto the cement below. The whole line waiting for their turn at the board gasped, a lifeguard came running and I grabbed her up into a big hug. Thankfully she didn’t get hurt, but my ego definately did! Emie was really kind to me after I apologized, though and said, “Maybe I’ll be ready next year, Mommy.” Yes, maybe you will, but it definately won’t be me pushing you off the board!

Prior to attending registration for his junior year at South Oldham High School, Austin Woodbury was hard at work pulling painters tape off of the newly painted orange walls in Kenwood Station Elementary School’s foyer. Woodbury and a team of volunteers had spent the evening before applying the paint with the help of two scaffoldings, donated by Jeremy Bosco of Robert Mattingly & Sons construction and McKenzie Synthetics. While Woodbury removed the tape, a friend applied a fresh coat of glaze to a painting of a horse on a nearby library wall.

The new artwork adorning the walls of Kenwood Station is the end result of Woodbury’s Eagle Scout project. He has spent the last month at Kenwood with a team of volunteers making his designs come to life. Though art is just a hobby for Woodbury, he knew he wanted to use his talents in design as a way to enhance his Eagle Scout project. “I’ve always been good at art and creating designs. I thought it would be a good idea to use art in my project,” said Woodbury. “First I was thinking of doing art work at hospitals but it was too difficult to get into a hospital because they are a little more restrictive. My mom came to Kenwood and found out that Mr. Moore wanted murals so I approached him with the concept.”

His most recent milestone got me to thinking about where those 100,000 miles have taken me. The single largest at one time was probably my road trip and the subsequent time I spent out west. In the summer of 2000 I went and worked in Yellowstone National Park. During that road trip I visited places in South Dakota, and Nevada, Wyoming, and Montana. Plus, everywhere between here and there. We’ve gone to Nolin Lake several times over the years together. But even with all of those big trips racking up the mileage, most of Lord Taurus’s miles come from the roads in Oldham County. He has been up every side street in Crestwood, and Pewee Valley. He has traveled most of the streets in LaGrange and Buckner and knows his fair share of the streets in Goshen. He has even been out to Westport a few times to visit.
